“When I see people stand fully in their truth, or when I see someone fall down, get back up, and say, ‘Damn. That really hurt, but this is important to me and I’m going in again’—my gut reaction is, ‘What a badass.’”
Dr. Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW
ABOUT ME
Welcome,
I am Erin Cravens, a licensed clinical social worker specializing in the treatment of trauma and related issues including, depression, adjustment disorders, difficulties with emotional regulation, stress management, and self-esteem. I utilize evidence-based theories such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Interpersonal Process to guide my work and influence the interventions used throughout each session. My goal as a therapist is to help you navigate difficulties while supporting you in utilizing and recognizing your own strength, resilience, and determination to affect positive change. I believe trust is built through honesty and authenticity, and my counseling style is engaging, conversational, and collaborative.
I started my own path towards clinical social work after working in the U.S. Naval Hospital in Guam. It was there that I experienced first-hand the support of social workers as they helped my husband and I during his transition out of the Navy after nine years as an FMF Navy Corpsman. I was supported and encouraged in the way that I needed during that time in my life and I knew that I wanted to help others in the same way.
I completed my masters in social work through Boston University and have served in a variety of clinical settings since 2013. Most recently from 2015-2019, I served as a senior staff therapist at Montana State University providing individual therapy to active duty and combat Veterans, their families, and university students from all ages and walks of life.
WHAT TO EXPECT
-
Your first session will be an hour long initial intake session where we will discuss the paperwork you filled out prior to our meeting. Intake forms include a demographic and clinical history form, treatment agreement, consent to treatment, and a notice of privacy practices. We will explore your current concerns, relevant history, and goals. I will also review policies, procedures, and the parameters around client confidentiality.
-
After your initial intake session, you can choose how often you would like to attend individual therapy sessions, which typically last between forty five and fifty minutes. The frequency and duration of therapy will depend largely on your needs, treatment goals, and progress. Many concerns are resolved with short-term therapy, however other chronic or more complex concerns may require a longer therapeutic process.
-
Individual therapy is a personal opportunity to receive support and experience growth during challenging times in life. Therapy allows you to identify aspects of your life that you would like to change, better understand yourself and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change.
-
I take a team approach to treatment, meaning we work collaboratively. While I will give you my professional opinion on diagnosis and best course of treatment, you are always in control of your treatment. If your condition is outside the scope of my practice or you may benefit from psychiatric medications, I will refer you to another clinician who can better meet your needs.
TREATMENTS USED
COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.
MINDFULNESS BASED THERAPY
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present and self aware of where you are and what you are doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Mindfulness is a quality that every human being already possesses; you just have to learn how to access it.
